Volunteer is nothing but offering one's skills, competence, knowledge and resources full heartedly for the purpose of other's need without any expectation of return. Traditionally, though, voluntary work is viewed as selfless deed which is done for other's good, today's voluntary work is a little different and taken as helping others along with aiming  to get something for their own. None of them are wrong because there is always an exchange of knowledge, skills, competence and resources between two people.

My Experience of Volunteering in Nepal

During my training course for “coordinator of international project management” in the areas of development service, humanitarian assistance and disaster crisis management I completed my four-month internship in Nepal. The contact between Arjun and me found out about the NGO Federation. After a few emails the cornerstones of our co-operation were clarified and in March 2009, I landed on the "Roof of the World". Open to what one might expects me, only with basic background information on the country, people and lifestyles, my opinions without bias, I lived my duration from day to day. During my time in Kathmandu and Ilam district near the eastern border to Darjeeling I worked in the fields of agriculture, economy and education. I became acquainted with the daily lives of those friendly and respectfully Nepalese. The amount of experience makes me smile inside every time when I think of one of the most important parts of my life. "How was it then," I am often asked. "Beautiful, but hard," is my constant reply. Well, because of cultural diversity, the similarities and differences between the German and European culture. Well, to widen my horizon like my knowledge's sake, that there are such and such people, no matter what corner of this planet. Well, these most special moments which I could alive. Like the literary festival in the nearby city of Ilam, with the happy faces of those who have not lost there smiling in very difficult living conditions. Well, the possibility of giving because of what I've received so far in my life. Hart, to be faced with very strength life situations and conditions day by day. Hard, to reset its own borders. After this time, it was clear that I will continue my work with NEDI, based on the friendship between Arjun and me. As part of our volunteer program we invite you very warmly to experience the real inside of the "Roof of the World" with its people and lifestyles.

 Während meines Lehrganges zum „Koordinator im internationalen Projektmanagement“ für die Bereiche Entwicklungsdienst, Humanitäre Hilfe und Krisen- Katastrophenmanagement, habe ich mein viermonatiges Praktikum in Nepal absolviert. Der Kontakt zwischen Arjun  und mir ergab sich über die NGO Federation. Nach wenigen Emails waren die Eckpunkte unserer Zusammen-arbeit geklärt und im März 2009 landete ich auf dem „Dach der Welt“.

Offen dem gegenüber was mich erwarten sollte, nur mit grundsätzlichen Hintergrund-informationen zu Land, Leute und Lebensweisen, sowie ohne Bewertungen oder Vorurteile ließ ich meinen Aufenthalt von Tag zu Tag nachhaltig auf mich wirken.

Während meiner Arbeit in Kathmandu und im Ilam District nahe der östlichen Grenze zu Darjeeling in den Bereichen Landwirtschaft, Wirtschaft und Bildungswesen lernte ich das tägliche Leben jener freundlichen und respektvollen Nepalesen kennen.

Die Menge an Erfahrungen und Erlebnissen lässt mich jedes Mal innerlich schmunzeln, wenn ich an einen der wichtigsten Abschnitte meines Lebens denke.

„Wie war es denn so“, werde ich oft gefragt. „Schön, aber hart“, ist meine gleichbleibende Antwort.

Schön, der kulturellen Vielfalt wegen, der Gemeinsamkeiten, der Unterschiede und der Ähnlichkeiten zwischen dieser und der deutsch europäischen Kultur.

Schön, der Erweiterung meines Horizontes und der Erkenntnis halber, das es solche und solche Menschen gibt, egal auf welchem Fleckchen dieses Planeten.

Schön, der ganz besonderen Momente halber, welche ich erleben durfte. Wie dem Literatur-festival in der Nähe von Ilam City, mit den fröhlichen Gesichtern derer, welche trotz sehr schwieriger Lebensverhältnisse ihr Lächeln nicht verloren haben.

Schön, der Möglichkeit des Gebens wegen von dem was ich bislang in meinem Leben erhalten habe.

Hart, gegebenen Lebenssituationen tagtäglich von Angesicht zu Angesicht gegenüber zu stehen

Hart, seine eigenen Grenzen neu zu setzen.

Nach dieser Zeit war klar, dass ich auch weiterhin im entwicklungspolitischen Bereich tätig sein werde und sich die freundschaftliche Zusammenarbeit zwischen Arjun und mir langfristig mit NEDI fortsetzen würde. Im Rahmen unseres Freiwilligenprogrammes laden wir Euch recht herzlich ein, das „Dach der Welt“ mit seinen Menschen und Lebensweisen, hautnah mit und zu erleben.
